Easter in Versilia

Sun, sea breeze and the streets of cities full of colors and the scent of flowers.

Spring changes the face of Versilia, making it a destination dreamed of by tourists from all over the world.

If you are thinking of giving yourself a few days of rest and relaxation at Easter, here is what you can do in Versilia, alone or in company.

Visit to the cities

There is a city on the Tuscan coast where the charm of the Dolce Vita is still intact. Have you ever been to Forte dei Marmi? Reference point of all Versilia, the city is famous for its widespread elegant and refined style.

The beach, European blue flag, has fine golden sand, ideal for pleasant walks by the sea. 5 kilometers long, it is divided between the part where there are the bathing establishments (all very well equipped) and the free beach. The latter is part of the larger WWF oasis of Le Dune, lying between Forte dei Marmi and Cinquale.

Not to be outdone is Pietrasanta, an ancient medieval village. Located near the mountain range of the Apuan Alps, the main attraction is located by the sea. Here, the long pier that extends a few meters into the water, provides an ideal point to enjoy a breathtaking view. Especially at sunset, when the sun slips behind the sea.

In Pietrasanta there is a splendid pine forest known as La Versiliana. Full of events during spring and summer, it is frequented throughout the day for the refreshing shade. Gabriele d'Annunzio resided in the villa within the park for a period of time.

The town center is also worth a visit. Among the most interesting monuments are the Cathedral of San Martino and the Church of Sant’Agostino. The Roman-Gothic cathedral dates back to the 13th-14th century. The church of Sant’Agostino, built during the fourteenth century, is in Roman style, while the bell tower dates back to the late Baroque era.

Finally, what about Viareggio? The most famous city of Versilia needs no introduction. Here you can spend your days by the sea and spend pleasant evenings in the clubs, open until late at night.

On the occasion of Easter, many activities offer a special menu to enhance the typical Tuscan cuisine.

Trekking

If you are a lover of nature walks, take a walk outdoors in the warmth of the spring sun.

Where is it? At Lake Massaciuccoli, in the municipality of Massarosa. You can walk over the lake thanks to special wooden walkways.

If you want to go deeper, you can delve into the reeds of the wild Lipu Oasis, renting small boats and canoes on site.

Another destination dedicated to adventure is the Antro del Corchia, the largest cave in Europe. Located in the heart of the Apuan Alps, in Levigliani di Stazzema, it has 53 kilometers of wells and tunnels. It was discovered in 1841 by the Leviglianese geologist and speleologist Giuseppe Simi.

The one kilometer aided path is the only visitable juncture of the cave.

Taste of tradition

Have you ever tasted Quaresimali? They are dry biscuits made with egg whites, flour, cocoa, powdered sugar and an orange peel. The dessert marks the entrance into the period of Lent.

If you arrive in Versilia a few days before Easter, you cannot fail to delight yourself with this cake in the shape of letters. According to tradition (of Florentine origins) it is a way to give shape to the message of the Gospel.

Another typical dessert of Versilia consumed during the Easter holidays is the Pasimata. A sweet and soft bread, of humble origins. In the past, it was cooked in wood-burning ovens.

The ingredients give the Pasimata its unmistakable flavor. In addition to flour and lard, we find sugar, brewer's yeast, anicini, eggs, raisins and a pinch of salt.
